Pumpkin is a type of winter squash that belongs to the species Cucurbita pepo and is native to North America. It has a thick, hard outer rind—most commonly orange—and a hollow interior filled with seeds and fibrous strands. Pumpkins grow on low, trailing vines and thrive in warm growing conditions. They are typically harvested in the fall when fully mature. Pumpkins have been cultivated for thousands of years and were an important food source for Indigenous peoples in the Americas. They are also widely associated with seasonal traditions, especially in autumn.
