Pomelo

Often called the "Moon of the Orchard," the pomelo (Citrus maxima) is the largest of all citrus fruits, reaching the size of a bowling ball and serving as a genetic patriarch to nearly every modern grapefruit variety. Native to Southeast Asia, it is a fruit defined by its incredible structural defense; its fragrant, yellow-green rind can be nearly an inch thick, acting as a natural shock absorber for the giant, tear-shaped vesicles within. Unlike its descendant, the grapefruit, the pomelo is prized for its "dry" sweetness and lack of bitterness; its juice sacs are firm and easily separated, allowing you to peel them away like individual gems of translucent gold or rose.

Brothers International is proud to offer various fruit juices and concentrates as USDA Organic certified.

Botanical: Citrus Maxima

The Largest Citrus Fruit

The Pomelo (Citrus maxima), the largest of all citrus fruits and a primary ancestor of the modern grapefruit, is native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and the Malay Archipelago. Cultivated for thousands of years, it holds deep cultural significance in China, where it is a staple during the Lunar New Year as a symbol of prosperity. Unlike many citrus fruits that were born from natural hybridization, the pomelo is a “pure” species. It eventually made its way to the Caribbean in the late 17th century, where it was cross-pollinated with the sweet orange to give birth to the grapefruit we know today.

In the modern beverage industry, pomelo is increasingly processed into NFC (Not From Concentrate) juice and juice concentrate, offering a more floral and less acidic profile than traditional grapefruit. Pomelo NFC juice is produced by directly pressing the fruit and pasteurizing the liquid without removing its natural water content. This process preserves the delicate, nuanced aromatics and the high Vitamin C content of the fresh fruit. It is highly sought after by premium beverage brands for use in high-end “cold-pressed” blends, sophisticated sparkling sodas, and as a floral base for craft cocktails.
